How Can You Improve the Results From Your Training?

Building Knowledge and Developing Skills:  Focusing Our Training Time

We know employees need to build both foundational knowledge and relevant skills for our training programs to be effective.  The secret sauce is developing the appropriate blend of the two to maximize the ROI from our programs.  Consider the following scenario.

How effective can a 2-day negotiation skills class be if over 50% of the training time is spent on knowledge-based lecture rather than negotiation skills practice?  And how complex and realistic can the skills practice scenarios really be in that setting?  Finally, how individualized and targeted is the feedback and guidance from the instructor on each learner’s practice in the practice scenarios?

For skills-based learning, internalizing complex new behaviors to improve performance requires hours, not minutes, of practice in a safe environment, with real-world scenarios and personalized, detailed learner feedback.  Our game-based learning provides this.

Confident, Skilled Employees Drive More Immediate Business Results

The 2-day negotiation example above was implemented in our game-based learning format in our course Merchants®.  Learners spend 2-3 hours per week over 4 to 5 weeks to complete the game.  Each learner spends at least 90% of their learning time applying, practicing and internalizing their new skills.  This level of skill application enables your employees to more readily utilize their newly acquired skills on the job immediately, and they are more likely to do so because of the confidence gained during the game.

Our Secret Sauce

  • Hours of active practice in the new skill throughout the game help develop confidence.
  • Game competitions motivate learners to apply the skill with the highest possible proficiency.  The higher the proficiency, the higher the learner’s score.
  • Ongoing, highly-personalized feedback in the context of real-world scenarios helps learners internalize even the fine points of each taught behavior.
  • The tips, tricks and tools we provide in some of our courses (including our personal productivity course Triskelion) for several weeks after the course help keep the optimal new behaviors in focus as the employee completes their ramp to competency.
